UFPE professors receive award for best article published in international journal in the category Theory and Methodology

The article “A new method for elicitation of criteria weights in additive models: Flexible and interactive tradeoff”, developed by professors from UFPE (Adiel Teixeira de Almeida, Jonatas Araujo de Almeida, Ana Paula Cabral Seixas Costa and Adiel Teixeira de Almeida Filho) won the “EURO Award for the Best EJOR Paper”, an award that elects the best article published in EJOR (European Journal of Operational Research), which is among the 5% most important in the area of operational research and management science in the ISI/JCR classification.

Since 2012 the EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) awards the best papers published in EJOR in three distinct categories: “best survey paper”, “best application paper” and “best theory/methodology”. A jury of renowned international researchers selects the winners of each category, who receive a prize of one thousand euros, in addition to being presented at the upcoming EURO or IFORS conferences.

The winning article was awarded in the “best theory/methodology” category, having competed with all the papers published during 2016 and 2017 in the EJOR periodical, adding a total of 1381 competing articles. It was presented on 26 June during the closing of the EURO Conference, which took place this year in Dublin, Ireland. After the event, the article will be available for free download for a short period on the EJOR website.

This is the first article that publishes FITradeoff, a new method for decision making that has generated a software registered at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and that, since its elaboration, has led to several other awards from papers published in international congresses with applications of the method in various contexts. These awards have been received by students and congresses of PPGEP, as well as by people from outside the UFPE and other countries, as in the case of the Italian researcher Marta Dell’Ovo, who developed an article, winner of an international award, using FITradeoff for the relocation of two hospitals in the city of Milan in a single center specialized in research, teaching, science and training, in addition to meeting the health demands of the local population.

Another relevant example of the use of FITradeoff, this time focused on the application in our local reality, is the work done by a PPGEP-UFPE former masters student, Maria Isabel Suassuna da Fonte, whose dissertation proposed the adoption of the method to help the Recife City Hall in the choise of the most appropriate location to implement a future Peace Community Center (Compaz).
